Nick and Jess drive away After the wedding is called off, Jess and Nick also unhappily decide to 'call it'. She is in the elevator, about to go and meet Teddy when a hand stops the doors from closing. On her way Nick calls out 'Jess or Katie? Fortunately, this is one of those times that Schmidt's meddling actually comes in handy, because he manages to make Nick realize that he really is still in love with Jess. They make awkward conversation about this. The morning after, Nick and Jess wake up in bed together.
This leads to Nick and Jess having a sexy standoff to see who would come running back to one another. In ' ' Jess breaks up with her boyfriend, Russell, claiming that she wants passion which they don't have - 'even if it's harder and hurts more. Nick's new girlfriend Julia doesn't like Jess. And which one was the hardest? It felt like it we waited any longer we would just be playing games with the audience and we found that it really helped us focus the show and come up with better stories. We're about to shoot Episode 19, so we're four episodes past this one, and it's the opposite. Jess makes Nick and Schmidt treat each other like the boss.

On the other hand, Nick and Jess getting together gave us a super steamy kiss, but it also stalled the show a bit. Jess turns up at Cece's apartment, says 'Nick kissed me,' and CeCe is shocked. At the end of the episode, Nick's plan was to follow Reagan to New Orleans for a few months and see how things went. He doesn't and asks if she wants to have questions. Jess tries to make Berkley leave but Nick tells him to stay. Jess and Nick decide to just get a drink as friends. This stuns Jess who then almost gets another kiss with Nick before Schmidt interrupts. He begins to leave but when he sees her he is completely wowed.
Keaton Season Three Schmidt gets a series of recent e-mails from his favorite actor Michael Keaton, who has sent letters ever since he was a kid. When she leaves to be with Sam he looks sad and disappointed. Jess walks in just a Nick is surrendering all the 'weapons' he'd brought to protect himself against Bob just in case. Jess apologizes for making him do all that, and Nick then admits that he thought about 'the rewards' too and that he feels they are two people who try to be friends but are sometimes attracted to each other. Nick looks amazed, but then Jess says that she thought it was attractive that he was trying at something, and he accuses her of being a golddigger.
Jess puts her hands on his neck and they kiss. He wants her to need him too much because he wants an excuse to stay at the loft and to abandon moving in with Caroline. They kiss and do it while wearing the jerseys. He tells her that she can't because it was a gift from his father to him as a child. Nick says that they haven't had the seeing other people conversation. .
Above, I noted how important it is to have subtle moments that lead up to bigger, dramatic ones. While everyone is 'asleep', Nick goes to the trash can to possibly retrieve the mug but is surprised to find that it's gone. Nick and Jess fight, and when he says he's her 'boyfriend without the rewards', Jess asks if he wants the 'rewards', and admits that she's thought about having 'the rewards' with him. They interrupt the kiss multiple times to yell at each other, until Nick yells, 'shut up! Man, I'm smiling like a happy hippo just writing this. They started going at it but the guy was on anti-depressants and couldn't really perform. The stand-off was fantastic because it reminded us that both Nick and Jess are pretty stubborn people but that at the end of the day, they would be willing to put aside just about any difference and compromise in order to be together.
